David Hummingbird Walton is a Singer/Songwriter/Storyteller who is truly a wandering minstrel. For more than 50 years he has travelled around North America and Hawaii writing songs, working part-time jobs, and playing music all along the way.
Born and raised in Sheffield, Alabama, David grew up playing in the forests along the banks of the Tennessee River. This gave him a lifelong love and appreciation of the natural world and the spiritual source of creation. The poetry of nature is an ongoing theme woven through his songs about peace, love, and understanding for all people and the Earth.
Influenced by many styles, David’s songs vary greatly. From the meditative solo bamboo flute of his 2003 recording “Beauty of the Earth” to the guitar vocal driven songs of his 2015 release “We’re All in this Together”, this is definitely music from the heart. These recordings are available for streaming on Spotify, Pandora, YouTube music, iHeartRadio, etc. Download on iTunes, Amazon Music, Etc.
After many years living in Oregon, Hawaii and other places, David is currently living back in his hometown by the river. The Native Americans called it “The Singing River” and it’s the home of a very rich musical heritage known as Muscle Shoals Music.
So if you long for a more peaceful and harmonious world and would like to hear something unique and refreshing, be sure to let the music of Hummingbird fly into your life.
~ If our visions and dreams are strong and pure, the beauty of life will forever endure.

My dear friends, I hope this summer of 2023 finds y’all well and happy. This year marks 51 years since I wrote my first song and I’m feeling so grateful for the musical life I’ve lived and all the good times we’ve shared together. And I’m so thankful for all of you!!! When Y’all are singing and dancing and enjoying the music it rocks my world and warms my soul!! And to all of you who have been supportive of my music and my life over the years, I say, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
For a very long time many of you have been encouraging me to record the songs and tell the stories about their creation. I appreciate the feedback and now my dream is to do just that.
I currently have well over 300 songs that I would like to record and I’m reaching out to the world and asking for donations of any amount to accomplish my goal.

In 2013 I had 3 heart attacks in 3 days. I’ve had heart problems since I was a kid and they finally caught up with me.
To get to my heart they put the catheter in at my right wrist. What it showed was a 95% blockage of the LAD Artery. Knowing that I have a family history of heart disease and that I have had symptoms since childhood, they said it might have been there for 50 years and that I had finally reached my limit.
I felt very positive. I always knew something was wrong and now I knew what it was and that they could fix it. So they put in a stent and sent me on my way the next day.
All seemed well. Then on the 3rd morning after the surgery I woke up to a very painful situation. My hand, arm, shoulder and shoulder blade had been completely traumatized by the procedure and I had lost all use of them. For the next month and a half it just hung at my side, seemingly lifeless except for the pain. Then my hand and arm started to move and I began to play a little guitar and flute.
I was happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I could play at all and sad because it was not the same. It was much harder to play and there were things I had done with ease on the guitar before and now I couldn’t do them at all. It was also very hard to play what had been my number 1 flute for performing and recording for 30 years.
On the day of my first heart attack I kept thinking that if I didn’t make it hundreds of songs would be lost forever. Thankfully I’m still here and in 2014 I started recording “We’re All In This Together”, which I released the next year. In 2016 I began working on an album to honor my southern roots. It was going quite well and my plan was to record at least one or two albums a year. Then the funds ran out and it’s been simmering on the back burner all these years. I really want to complete this project ASAP.
I was writing this a year ago and at this point I couldn’t continue the story. This stuff is hard to write about. It carries a lot of deep emotional feelings for me. But now I’m ready to tell my story.
I am so grateful to have been able to record and release “We’re All In This Together”. The problems with my hand were getting worse and I had a tough time with the flute overdubs, but I’m really happy with how they turned out. After these sessions I couldn’t play that flute for the next 8 years. Sometimes at gigs I could play the guitar really well. At other times my hands would shake and cramp and I would be unable to finish whatever song I was playing. It was embarrassing and I lost a lot of confidence. But I’ve continued to play on as it’s one of my greatest joys! Then last year I had a breakthrough and was able to play the special flute some again. I wept with joy and gratitude.
I believe anything is possible, so I’m moving forward with my dream to record these 50 years worth of songs. Thanks so much to my wonderful Family and Friends for all their Love, Support and Encouragement through these times.

With Much Love And Gratitude, David
As far as performing Live in these times I’m focused on playing acoustic gigs for small groups of people in intimate settings. Preferably outside, but I’m happy to play inside too! I really enjoy doing house concerts and I love playing around a fire when it’s possible. So, my friends, the future is bright with possibilities. I look forward to singing with Y’all sometime soon. Till then, may you walk in Peace.
More coming soon: The Songs and the Stories with lead sheets to past and future releases.
